About Western Cactus

At Western Cactus, we are a family-run grower based in Vista, California with a long history in cactus and succulents.

Our story began with Hans Britsch, who grew up in a small village in the Swiss Alps surrounded by mountain fields and wildflowers. From a young age, he worked to help support his family and developed a lifelong appreciation for plants and agriculture. After studying horticulture in Switzerland, Hans and his wife Gretl immigrated to California in search of opportunity and a place where they could build a life together through farming.

In 1966, they purchased a small nursery in Vista, California and founded Western Cactus. Making deliveries out of a VW Bus along Highway 101, they slowly built the business through long hours, quality plants, and strong relationships with customers and employees.

Today, Western Cactus remains a family-run grower focused on cactus and succulent production. While the company has grown over the years, our values have stayed the same — work hard, treat people right, and grow quality plants we're proud to stand behind.

Nearly 60 years later, the business continues to be operated by the Britsch family with the same hands-on approach, hard work, and care that it was built on from the beginning.
